Oswald was Walt Disney's first big cartoon star, but he was lost to Universal after Disney discovered the character was owned by them while trying to renew his contract. Disney created Mickey Mouse as a replacement and went on to lobby for copyright extensions that helped shape copyright laws in the U.S. and around the world. Disney eventually reacquired Oswald in 2006 through an exchange of assets with Universal.

The copyrights for the original Oswald the Lucky Rabbit character and shorts expired in January 2023. This means that the character and the films are now in the public domain and can be freely adapted and interpreted

Before Mickey Mouse, there was his predecessor: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
