N. T. Rama Rao (N.T.R)

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) was an iconic Indian actor and a revolutionary politician who fundamentally shaped the cultural and political landscape of Andhra Pradesh. Starting his career in the late 1940s, he became a "Universally-renowned star of acting" (Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarvabhouma), starring in over 300 films and becoming famous for his portrayal of Hindu deities like Lord Krishna and Lord Rama.
Leveraging his massive popularity, NTR founded the regional Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982 to champion the self-respect of the Telugu people. Within nine months, he achieved a landslide victory, becoming the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, a position he held for three terms. He implemented populist welfare schemes, such as subsidized rice, and introduced significant administrative and social reforms, including equal property inheritance rights for women. His legacy endures as a "messiah of the masses" who changed Indian politics.
