emissions. This development, reported in August 2025, represents a potential "sixth-generation" approach to internal combustion, aiming to keep gasoline-derived vehicles relevant by using internal fuel-reforming to generate hydrogen, rather than requiring external hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

Mazda's Six-Stroke Hydrogen Approach
Engine Function: This "fuel reforming system for vehicles" uses engine heat and a catalyst to break down gasoline, extracting hydrogen to be immediately injected back into the engine as fuel.
Six-Stroke Process: The cycle includes traditional intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes, followed by a fifth stroke that brings in water/air, and a sixth stroke that re-injects fuel or exhausts steam, significantly increasing thermal efficiency.
Carbon Management: The process separates hydrogen from carbon. The carbon is stored in a dedicated unit, to be removed later during routine maintenance.
Emission Goals: While not perfectly zero-emission under all conditions, the engine runs carbon-neutral by utilizing hydrogen produced on-demand.
2.5L Integration: While the patent is often described as a V6-style innovation, Mazda is actively researching 2.5-liter and smaller, efficient engines to be compatible with e-fuel (synthetic fuel), biofuels, and liquid hydrogen to achieve carbon neutrality.
