Elon Musk co-founded Zip2, a software web company, with his brother Kimbal in 1995. In 1999, Compaq purchased Zip2 for $307 million. Musk used a large portion of his profits from Zip2 to start X.com, which later merged with a competitor to become PayPal. PayPal was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
