Hi, everyone. My name is Austin McCullers. If the name sounds familiar, it's probably because I'm the younger brother of Lance McCullers Jr., the professional baseball player for the Houston Astros. Greatness seems to run in the family-or at least for some of us.
Today, I'm opening up about something l've kept buried for nearly 30 years. I'm gay. And while I'm proud of how far l've come, it's been anything but an easy road.
For years, I hid who I was, suffocating under the weight of secrecy. It wasn't just that I didn't date-it was that I couldn't. My own perfectionism wouldn't allow me to believe I deserved love, or that anyone extraordinary could want someone like me. Instead, I poured myself into darker distractions: gambling and drugs. I've lost hundreds of thousands of dollars, chasing fleeting highs and empty victories. Those choices cost me more than money. They cost me relationships and trust. But maybe that's for the best.
